How to Style Artificial Garlands on a Mantel

How to Style Artificial Garlands on a Mantel

A mantel can feel ready for the season with a simple line of greenery, a few repeated details and space for the room's favorite objects. Plan the shape first, then add decorations a little at a time.

1. Choose the shape for your room

Look at the mantel from the sofa or doorway. Decide whether the greenery should frame a mirror, sit beneath artwork or become the main focal point. Three easy layouts give you a starting point:

  • A straight line: keep most of the greenery on top of the mantel for a compact, simple display.
  • Two matching drops: let the ends fall by similar amounts for a balanced outline.
  • One longer drop: allow one side to hang lower and keep the other side shorter for a more relaxed shape.

Choose the layout before buying greenery. A straight line uses a different length from a display with deep hanging ends.

2. Measure the whole decorating path

Use a flexible tape or a piece of string to follow the route you want the garland to take. Include the drops and any curve across the front, rather than measuring only the mantel's width.

Example: a 60-inch mantel with a 12-inch drop at each end needs an 84-inch path, or 7 feet, before adding a front drape. This example explains the measurement; it does not mean every 60-inch mantel needs the same length.

Compare your path with the selected option of the Artificial Norfolk Pine Garlands or Artificial Cedar Garlands. Both have length and pack options. Check the length of each piece as well as the number included; two separate pieces are not automatically one continuous garland.

3. Open the branches before attaching anything

Lay the garland on a clear surface. Gently separate compressed branches, turning some tips upward and allowing others to follow the edge. Work along the whole piece so the fullness is reasonably even.

Put it loosely in position and step back. If the center looks bulky, spread branches along the mantel before adding more greenery. If one end looks thin, turn a few tips toward the visible gap.

This is also the moment to check the room's practical details. Leave access to outlets and keep hanging ends away from places where they may be caught or pulled.

4. Secure the outline, then build the layers

  1. Choose suitable fixings. Match the fixing to the mantel surface and the combined weight of greenery, ornaments and lights. Follow its directions, including any preparation or waiting time.
  2. Set the main support points. Secure the chosen outline so the drops stay where you want them. Do not rely on decorations to hold the garland in place.
  3. Check the view again. Adjust the branch direction and hanging ends before adding small details.
  4. Add one repeated accent. Start with ribbon or a few ornaments, then repeat that detail in small groups.
  5. Check the finished weight and clearance. Inspect the fixings again after adding decorations.

Test adhesive products in an inconspicuous area and follow their surface restrictions. Painted wood, unfinished wood and stone may need different fixing methods.

5. Try a simple seasonal combination

Greenery with a few clear ornaments

Keep the greenery visible and place clear ornaments in spaced groups. The Clear Icicle & Snowflake Christmas Ornaments offer shapes to compare for this look. Check their scale against the hanging branches before using the whole set.

A fuller corner with mixed branch shapes

Build up one corner with a few Artificial Cedar Stem Sets, using suitable separate attachments. Repeat a smaller amount elsewhere so the added texture feels connected to the rest of the display.

A mantel that still displays family objects

Leave open areas around photographs or a favorite decorative object. Spread the greenery beneath them rather than hiding everything behind a dense continuous layer. Use flameless decorations if you want a candle-like accent near the greenery.

Check placement and keep the layout for next time

Keep artificial greenery and all attachments away from open flames, hot surfaces and heating equipment. Follow both the fireplace or appliance instructions and the decoration instructions. If you use lights, choose a set suitable for the location and follow its placement guidance.

Take a photo of the finished display. When packing it away, remove loose ornaments, follow the item's care directions and store the greenery without crushing its branch shape. Label separate pieces if they served different sides of the mantel.

With your decorating path measured, compare seasonal greenery and accents by the length, quantity and texture your layout needs.
